Lido

The Lido is the barrier island that separates the lagoon on which Venice rests from the Adriatic Sea. Long a region outside the aristocratic sphere, the Lido began to be a tourist resort area in the 19th century, reaching a pinnacle of popularity in the early 20th century. The popularity of the Lido owes much to the new popular pastime of going to the beach, which emerged in the relatively conservative time period of the mid-19th century.
